Great Dance and Ballet Books for boys!

Share it - If you needed or liked this post, others will too!!

Finding a book about dance is easy! But finding a book about dance or ballet or any other style where the main characters or information is either gender-balanced or about boys, is not so easy!

Great dance and ballet books for boys include images or photos that boys are easily able to identify with. They are either gender-balanced or include main male characters in their storyline. They focus on providing information for boys and males about dance.

In our society, there is definitely a permeating stigma around boys and dance which although is constantly being broken down is still a contributing factor to the numbers of boys and males taking up the hobby and profession. It is also a contributing fact to the types of literature available on dance. Most books about dance are about girls or women, and those that do include males may have one or two, per say for example ten females. And yes this possibly accurately currently describes many dance studio classrooms (many which have only 1 or 2 male dancers in their entire schools!), but to make dance more attractive to boys we need to be diligent in providing more images and resources that showcase boys dancing to encourage more to do so which is why I created this list.

I also realised after reading some of ‘Men who Dance’ by Peter Lang that some of the books on this list also perpetuate the narrative within society that dance is somehow not normal for boys to do and that joining in a dance class or becoming a male dancer is an aspiration thwart with obstacles mainly that dance and in particular ballet is for girls, and that boys who dance have to overcome adversity to do so.

I just want to write a little disclaimer here as the mother of two girls and two boys.

  • YES, these books can absolutely be given and read to little girls as well.
  • YES, I know that dinosaurs, mosters and pirates are not just for boys, but having boys I know that they enjoy reading about them which is why I included books about dance and things like dinosaurs on this list.
  • YES, books about little girls dancing should also be read by boys, but are not on this list because they are generally easier to find.
  • YES to any other argument you might have about gender neutrality, sexism etc…

And so lets get on with the list……
