The Boston Conservatory dance program began in 1943 and had the first-ever specialized college dance department in the country. North Dakota – ND

University of North Dakota, Grand Forks
Minor in Dance, BFA in Musical Theatre

Unfortunately, no university or college at this time in North Dakota has a dedicated dance major or degree. The closest I could find was the BFA in Musical Theatre and Minor in Dance offered at the University of North Dakota. The University of North Dakota is the state’s biggest and oldest dedicated dancers could increase their training by joining the Cheer, Dance or Hockey Cheer team.

  • The dance minor can be completed in two years and allows you to study courses in dance such as ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary and musical theatre style dance.
  • The Musical Theatre degree includes the same courses as described above but also includes training in acting and voice with the aim of helping students become a triple threat for a career in musical theatre.
  • The Dance Minor can also supplement many other areas of study including the many degrees and certificates in education and teaching the university also offers.

  • The one thing that makes this program in Ohio unique is that students can study at other campuses in New York that Oberlin is affiliated with such as the Tisch School of the Arts, Trinity/La MaMa Performing Arts Program, the GLCA (Great Lakes Colleges Association) Arts Program, as well as the Laban Centre in London. This makes it possible for students to study the craft with a variety of other teachers and students outside of the curriculum of their own college.

Texas Woman’s University, Texas
BA in Dance, BA in Dance with 6-12 education dance certification, MA in Dance, MFA in Dance, Ph.D in Dance.

First, don’t let the title fool you. This university is not just strictly women, in fact, men have been attending the university since 1972. Some titles just stick despite the passage of time. This Department of Dance allows undergraduate students to pick between two emphasis – dance studies, and dance education.

  • The course for the BA in Dance has been created to prepare students for performance-related careers, for teaching where certification is not required and even in related fields such as arts management and programming. Whereas the Education emphasis prepares students for teaching in middle and secondary schools.
  • This dance program at Texas Woman’s University goes all the way up to a Ph.D. level, one of only five doctoral courses dedicated to dance in the country. The University claims their Ph.D. is the most well established having been founded in 1958.
  • The Dance Department offers Graduate Assistantships to graduates who want to learn what being part of a dance faculty and/or teaching dance in higher education is all about. At any time the university has 14-16 Graduate Assistants that support the dance major programs in various ways from publicity, recruitment, retention, in digital media and teaching both studio and theory courses.

Washington – WA

University of Washington, Seattle
BA in Dance, Minor in Dance, MFA in Dance, Dance Teaching Endorsement and Honors Program

The Department of Dance at the University of Washington offers a program that does not focus specifically on technique, but in understanding what is behind the technique. They want their students to be able to think about dance with a deeper understanding rather than just learning steps and routines.

  • That is not to say that they don’t teach you to dance in this program, because then it wouldn’t be a real dance program. They have an extensive list of classes that go beyond the typical classical ballet, modern, jazz and tap. They also offer the students classes that would teach street and club dance, swing, improvisation, etc.
  • Not only does this program offer a summer study, but they allow undergraduate and graduate students to study their craft overseas through a study abroad program. The classes can last as little to 3 weeks or if a year or more. The places you can study are Johannesburg, Rome, Madrid, among others.
